lainie in where else? @ Oct 4, 2004 0:44 AM

Yep, still in Perth. Had an interesting day yesterday though. I was sitting by the library when a guy of about 30 started talking to me. He was doing card tricks and did one for me, although it didn't exactly work. I thought he was a traveller, since he had a big backpack, but it turns out he's Australian and is homeless at the moment. Makes his money by doing card tricks. He was interesting to talk to, but have to say I didn't feel too sorry for him. He said he just came back from a couple years travelling in the UK, so obviously he has had some financial resources. He didn't seem mentally ill or disabled or anything, maybe just not wanting to work? Who knows. He had enough money to smoke cigarettes though! Anyway, I think he wanted money from me, so I lied and said I'm just a student. There was a anti-war demonstration near where we were sitting, and he complained that it was going to take away from his business. Boo hoo....There's a federal election here in 5 days, I wonder if John Howard will be out? Interesting...

After that, I went to a job centre where, when I told the guy I had only about 10 days left in Australia, he told me to go lay on the beach instead of work. He didn't have any kind of work I could do for so short a time. Too bad. I also checked out some hostel notice boards and didn't seem to be much. Everything wants at least a commitment of 1-3 months, which I suppose is fair. I really only have 10 days left here, since I fly out on the night of the 14th, it really isn't much time I guess for working. Blah.

When I was walking back to the hostel I heard a cell phone ringing. It was over in some bushes so I grabbed it, but it had stopped ringing. Haha there was a text message on it (ok so I'm nosy) which said "so did you get the tattoo?" I called the listing for "home" and reached some guy's mother. I told her where he could pick up the phone (at my hostel) and wondered if she knew her son was getting a tattoo. ;p hehe I imagine he was walking down the street the night before, drunk, and somehow threw his phone into the bushes. The hostel's near a big bar and pub area so it's quite likely. I went out once with some girls from the hostel, but never again, the drinks are super expensive- $6.80 for a pint of beer, I almost fainted at the prices! And cocktails, like Long Island Ice Tea are in the double digits- $15 or so! It is just astonishing!  Oh well.

Well, now I have to decide what I'm going to do for the next 10 days. Went on the train today and looked at a couple hostels, some in Fremantle, which is just outside of town. There's also a backpacker resort in town which has a swimming pool, gym, free breakfast, among other things. Just lovely and not too pricey either. But we'll see. I might just break down and go down south (though my bank account will surely protest). I am such a bad bad tourist, since I don't want to spend any money. But maybe going somewhere is better than dying of boredom? Then again, it's been pretty sunny and warm here, perhaps I"ll just lay on the beach (or the pool at that resort!). hmmmm....what to do, what to do..
